The Power of Advertising And Suggestion

I know David’s [1] covered this one, [2] but I have a angle I think worth discussing.

TAUNTON  â€” Michelle Carter, the Plainville woman who urged her high school boyfriend to kill himself through a series of texts and phone calls, was responsible for his death, according to a judge who today found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the landmark case.

So the judge feels that the woman is guilty for inciting violence. Granted, violence against oneself, but still, there is a responsibility for the death. Okay, let’s take that at face value for the moment, and compare that to other incitements [3] we’ve seen recently.

The civility and decorum of political debate has devolved since the election of Donald Trump at a breathtaking clip.

I know Republicans who are afraid to say they are Republicans and support Donald Trump. Over disagreements about the proper role of government, Republicans are regularly called racists, homophobes, Islamaphobes and sexists.

Today, Democrats regularly impugn the motivations, decency, and even the humanity of their political opponents.

Just a week and a half ago, Kathy Griffin reenacted a beheading of our president.

This week in a Shakespeare play in New York, liberals publicly reenacted yet another assassination of President Trump.

Members of Congress have been screamed at, insulted, and run off the road by angry Democrats.

The so-called peaceful “women’s” rally in Washington included musings of blowing up the White House by star guest speaker, Madonna.

Trump headquarters in North Carolina was firebombed during the primary, and let’s not forget that Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine’s own son was arrested for violence at a Trump rally.

Of course there are hundreds more incidents, with a hat tip to John Hawkins here’s just 20 of them. [4]

If the woman in Massachusetts is ultimately responsible for the death caused by the messages that she was sending, does that mean that the Democrats quoted in Hawkins article are also responsible for the violence resulting from the messages that they are sending?

I will say this again….If you had any doubts as to whether or not advertising works, doubt no longer. In the end, that’s what this is. A reaction to an advertising campaign. An advertising campaign disguised as news. You simply cannot have 24 hour media coverage that is essentially a call to arms to depose a sitting president and not have people react accordingly.
