Nightly Ramble: Trump

I’m at Columbia New Jersey is this is written. I’m preparing to run out to Long Island in the morning to deliver a load of salsa. The trailer always smells so good hauling that stuff. I have a slow cooker in the truck, and have occasionally made chili soup or what have you, and unfortunately I spend about half the day wanting to stop and eat because it smells so good. Well that’s the problem here. The trailer smells so good for a couple of days afterward and I generally end up having to buy a bottle or two to persuade my nose that salsa really does exist.

Two new steer tires, 4 new drive tires, some other repairs, and I’m actually in very good shape. I’ve still got an occasional warning light about the diesel exhaust fluid pump, but I think it’s a false alarm. It only occurs when the engine is extraodinarily warm. I think of Center going bad. We’re working on it. Welcome to my world.

The more I watch Donald Trump, the more I am convinced he is not the person we want to see in the White House. That said, he is in fact serving the purpose of conservatism. Now, given his history of donating large sums of money to Democrat party people, including Hillary Clinton, that may take some explanation.

I’ve already written rather extensively about corruption of elected officials, most of them Democrats. Most useful is an article I wrote for pajamasmedia back in 2009. In it, I explained that a local businessman was donating to the Clintons very heavily when he has not had a history of donating to Democrat Party causes or people before. I suggested at the time that it seems clear to me but what was going on was that he was hoping to buy influence to get his business objectives accomplished.

I’m going to suggest that the reason Trump was donating to Democrat party people & causes, Hillary Clinton in particular, was to grease the wheels of his business ventures with people who would ostensibly hold power in the government. It doesn’t make Trump look very good that he’s been buying governmental influence, but on the other hand one can certainly understand him becoming a full-fledged Republican, & a conservative, after years of having to buy off Democrats to survive in the business world.

Buying influence among Democrats certainly does not speak well of the morality surrounding Mr Trump. There are a number of other reasons of course for not wanting him to be at the top of the GOP ticket. That said, I think it clear but Mr Trump’s activities thus far have shown the degree of anger and frustration there is amongst the rank and file against the GOP establishment.

If you think that Trump hasn’t been successful in terms of bringing an increased level of testosterone to the GOP,  how does one explain Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate the other day? I suggest you cannot. What we saw was Ted Cruz recognizing that Donald Trump has tapped into a huge vein of support… because he’s willing to represent the extreme level of anger that is out there a monster Democrat rank and file. Anger at the GOP establishment for not representing them. For instead, representing the Democrats.

As I say, I hold no illusion that Mr Trump will be going be president, or get the nomination. I fully anticipate his blowing up in the near future.

But I would advise caution to the remainder of the GOP field, about attacking him. Anyone who wants to stand a chance at getting the presidency had best understand that the only way to do that is to embrace the sentiments being put forward by the rank and file, and at the moment sadly Trump and now Ted Cruz, are the only ones willing to do that.

Addendum, David:

While Eric was on the road, the nation’s official village idiot, Joe Biden, dropped into Eric’s home town of Greece, New York, to proverbially cut the ribbon on a large barrel of lard, called photonics.  Despite the fact the event was within walking distance of me, I declined to attend.   It does appear that Biden managed  to avoid inserting his foot into his mouth, this time.
