Fox:

John McCain will suspend his presidential campaign Thursday and has asked to postpone his debate Friday with Barack Obama so the two senators can return to Washington to help negotiate a Wall Street bailout, an approach to the financial crisis and campaign that Obama rejected.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system,” Sen. McCain said in mid-afternoon remarks to reporters in New York. “If we do not act, every corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.”

The Republican presidential candidate asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone his first debate with Obama, which is scheduled to take place Friday night at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

Obama responded by saying that such disruptive measures were unnecessary.

So, when faced with a choice of doing the work of the people, work he was already elected to do, or working for his own political advancement, Obama has chosen to serve his own political advancement.  That’s all we need to know about Obama’s fitness for office.

  1. We are electing a president in 40 days. Senator Obama seems to be the only one who remembers this. There are 98 other Senators, 435 members of the House of Representatives and George W. Bush and his staff in Washington, D.C. who are, theoretically at least, equipped to deal with our current economic situation. Both Senators Obama and McCain are meeting the Mr. Bush and congressional leaders tomorrow to discuss the economy. Fine, let them meet and let them discuss. I am sure their ideas will be appreciated and their input welcomed. Then let them get on with the election.

The McCain campaign is suggesting that we postpone the presidential campaign until when… after the election? Get on with the campaign, for heavens’ sake!

The President may very well be equipped to deal with the situation but he is legally unable to do so without both houses of Congress also taking action. Whatever else might be said about the two individuals, McCain and Obama, it must be pointed out that the two are still sitting United States Senators, whose first duty is not to get elected, but to do the business for which they were already elected. McCain recognizes this, his opponent apparently does not.

I think I can pretty much guarantee you that John McCain will not be voting “present” when this thing comes up for a vote.

Frankly it is the difference between their attitudes in this matter, that will be the story in the election.
