The Sandiego Union-Tribune [1] reports:

“CAMP PENDLETON – Camp Pendleton Marines reacted with glee this morning on learning that Marine Gen. Peter Pace, who once served at the base, was nominated by President Bush to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
‘We’re all standing a little bit taller after hearing the news that a Marine will hold the top job, and we’re very proud of his nomination,’ said Lt. Col. T.V. Johnson, director of public affairs at Camp Pendleton. ‘This is no surprise because he’s been a great Marine.’ “

This would be the very first Marine to hold the post.
I’ll be interested to see if any Democrats try to block this one.
