Federal tobacco taxes went up April 1 as part of an increase to pay for expanded federal health insurance programs for uninsured children.The federal tax on cigarettes is now $1.01 per pack, up from 39 cents. Federal levies on rolling paper, cigars and other tobacco products also jumped.
