(Fox News)– Senior Al Qaeda commander Abu Saeed al-Masri has been killed in recent clashes with Pakistani forces in a Pakistani region near the Afghan border, a security official told Reuters on Tuesday.

“He was believed to be among the top leadership of Al Qaeda,” the senior security official told the news agency on condition of anonymity.

Certainly good news, if true. I openly admit my understanding of current-day Pakistan isn’t quite up to the drill.  That said, I must also say, I find myself curious about the nature of the Pakistani government’s reasoning and strategy, here. They do seem to be working the tribal areas a bit more completely than they have before, and with some success, too, if I read the headlines correctly. Is it US pressure, or something else that’s driving this effort, I wonder?
