Nightly Ramble: Themes And Schemes, The Gray Lady And the Iceberg, The Pope Shows Up, the Stars Fall, the Ground Shakes, And More

  • In talking with a few people, I’ve decided that instead of going for an all in one shot theme change, I’m going to try and use the existing framework, and do a slow change over time. Dabble with the colors, and the placement, over a period of weeks. Several reasons, mostly because I don’t need the downtime on the site, and I don’t want to design in a hurry. Took me nearly half a year to get the thing working well when I first set it up, and about a year in total to get it tuned just so. Darned if I want to go through that again, particularly during an election cycle.
  • Speaking of that, the fallout continues [1] from the debate of night before last. Obama, predictably, has started falling, but not as much as his performance would seem to warrant. I make the assumption that the reason is Hillary Clinton’s performance wasn’t any better, despite what crowing I’m seeing from her cheering section. Undecideds are still running around 10%… a huge number for a race this far along, and indicative of a pair of candidates who are equally problematic, for the Democrats. That’s OK, guys, the rest of us don’t think they’re worth much either. Sucks to be you.
  • I see that the New York Times is reporting record losses. [2] We’ve discussed the reasons for this time and time again. I take great comfort in the fact that ol’ Pinch will be huddling fearfully down in the bilges (Port side, of course) when the gray lady finally goes down.
  • Google, [3] meanwhile, saw a 30% rise in profits in Q1, and their shares are peaking. The two founders made a quick buck… around 2 billion of them,  by picking just now to sell off a lot of their stock.
  • So, Bloomberg [4] is looking forward to an adult in the White House? Well, I guess that would be comforting to someone like Bloomberg, who so clearly needs adult supervision.
  • The Pope headed to New York City [5], today.
  • Maybe there’s no connection to the papal visit, but I see Stars fell on Indiana, last night. [6]Well, night before last, actually.
  • I also see a quake [7]woke a lot of people up a bit early from Kentucky to Wisconsin, this morning. Supposedly, a 5.4 quake. I wonder if there’s any connection between the quake and the Indiana bit? And for that matter, the Pope’s visit.  The Vatican special effects department must be working overtime on this one. (And no, I’m not being disrespectful; I suspect he’d enjoy the joke)
  • I see Sue Myrick [8] has called for Jimmy Carter’s passport to be revoked. Well, that’s a first step, anyway.
  • What in the world do I have to do to get the attention of Memeorandum?  We’re making newspapers all over the country, our hitrates have doubled, and yet, nary a peep out of them… depite our running a right column link for them. Why am I wasting right-column space?
