I keep hearing rumors around the web that Hillary Clinton’s people are behind the prostitution bust on Eliot Spitzer.

Now, I will say up front that there may be nothing to these rumors, but they’re not going away.

One of the ideas backing this is that business with Spiter’s insistence on driver’s licenses for illegals here in the Vampire state. Certainly, a pivotal point in Clinton’s demise… she came down on all sides of that one. Embarrassingly so.  Recall, too, that Spitzer, while he’s endorsed Clinton,  had to be dragged aboard the Clinton express, according to The Nation at the time. So, while he’s a super delegate, and ostensibly promised to Clinton, he’s a less than full- willing supporter, and she has a bit of an axe to grind with him, or so goes the rumor.

Now, mind, I don’t give much to this rumor. There’s not a whole bunch of solid evidence backing it, yet. That the rumor surfaces now, strikes me as interesting, though. Who would gain by such a move? Certainly revenge is a factor, and Clinton is known as being vindiictive as hell. Would Obama be spreading such a rumor? I tend to doubt it. He’d have little to directly gain by it.  There’s a lot of cloud in this picture, and not much solid.

All that said, none of this should shock anyone, even if true.  The troubling thing to my mind is that Clinton has a reputation for making the most of an opponents known weaknesses. Note the word “known’.  This stuff with Spitzer, then, would have been going on for quite a while, and would have been an established pattern, for Clinton to know to take advantage of it.

Perhaps most disturbing at all, is not that the rumors of Clinton’s involvement here are true… or false… they may or may not be… but that they are believable.

Addendum:  (David L)

Color me skeptical.  The Clintons are not noted for political ethics.   Yet  unless this is some strange attempt to get sympathy which I completely fail to understand, I don’t see how the further association of adultery with the Clntons’ helps her campaign.   The IRS notification route seems pausible

  1. Oh, I agree…  I’m skeptical as well, which is why I make a point of saying I don’t give much to the rumor, or the truth of it.

But it does strike an interesting question, who would benefit, or feels they would, from the spreading of this rumor.
One place I’d heard this was XM’s War Room this morning. (Also available locally on 1040/WYSL) They may be getting it from some of the same folks, I dunno.

  2. Who benefits?  Let me see: Andrew Coumo, David Patrick, Joe Brunno, Rudi Guiliani, Sheldon Silver, Wall Street and every public employee labor union in the state.

  3. Indeed.
Which, it seems to me backs the idea that this arrest was externally motivated. Hillary? I’m not so sure. But the rest? Hmmmm.
