I notice the web is going nuts about reports that Alberto Gonzalez is about ready to resign his position as attorney general.  The left, in particular, seems to be doing a grave dance on this one, though it seems unclear to me as to why. After all, if he’s as bad as they claim, would it be better for them if he was still in the attorney general spot, come election day?

gonzo1.jpgOn the other hand, I suppose that since he has been a target of such as the New York Times with their false accusations of perjury, (Shrug) I suppose I can understand the victory claims.  Still, the old Bithead adage about the worst possible thing you can do to a democrat, is give them precisely what they ask for, seems to apply here.  Odds on favorite for replacing Mr. Gonzalez, is Michael Chertoff.  Running a close second at the moment by some reports, notably Fox, is the current solicitor general Paul Clement, though the rumor mills have it that Clement would be more of an intern pick, rather than a permanent position holder.
McQ, In his response is this morning, points to an interview with Chuckles the Clown Schumer, who says he would prefer to conduct the confirmation hearings in the spirit of looking forward, and intimating that he doesn’t want to spend a lot of time dredging up Gonzalez.  McQ doesn’t believe in for a second, and frankly nor do I.  In Schumer we have someone who made a career of dredging up the past, (at least, bits and pieces of it) for current political gain.  The idea that he wouldn’t do so in this case is questionable at least. The word “desperation” pops up from the lexicon once again.

“What we Democrats have always said is that we need somebody in this department … who will put rule of law above all others, rule of law above any political consideration,” Schumer said on CNN Monday. “… Our attitude is going to be one of cooperation.”

If the law was and is their concern, why concern themselves with Gonzalez at all?  The firing of those attorneys was not illegal by any stretch of the imagination.  Indeed, it has been a matter of routine, the most recent previous occasion for such being the Clinton administration, which the democrats said not word one about.  the fact of the matter was and remains that they were after political blood.  Nothing more.  This had nothing whatever to do with the rule of law, and everything to do with politics as usual for the democrats.  When even the New York Times admits that the charge of perjury was unfair , as leveled by the democrats….

(Sigh)

My own view, is that he probably should have told congressional democrats to get stuffed, over year ago. After some initial screaming that would have been the end of the conversation.  They’ve been trying to nail him on this fired attorney business, and the fact of the matter is is that there was nothing illegal about what happened.  The best response would have been to tell them to get used to the idea that they weren’t in the white house.  Here again, the spirit of “bipartisanship” on the part of the administration was neither required nor desired.  It cost them and us far too much.

One Response to “Gonzalez to Resign”

  1. Let wait to see who gets confirmed out this process.  Is this a trade-up or down?  Michael Chertoff doesn’t thrill me.  One, he not doing to great at Homeland Security.  Two, he would require two Senate confirmation battles.

I trust Chuckles as far as I can throw him and my throwing shoulder is ailing.
