USO…
I just spent the last 30 minutes talking to the director of the Savannah USO. And can I just say WHAT a charming lady she was? She was returning my call from last week in response to a book request I had read on WTOC.com. I have at least 100 books sitting in a box ready to be donated, and I couldn’t think of anyone who needed them more than our military men and women. So she’s going to send someone out to the house this week to pick them up. We ended up talking about the soldiers and I asked her what other items were needed for them. She ran down a little list of things that they need and I’m passing them along to you guys. I think it’s VERY IMPORTANT to support these soldiers in ANY WAY POSSIBLE. She was telling me last week about a group of soldiers who were stuck in a small town in Iraq with nothing but a toothbrush. You wouldn’t believe how much they valued that toothbrush. The same goes for deodorant. I can’t imagine not having deodorant to wear in a hot, humid environment.

So please, contact your local USO office and ask what you can do to help. Think about the money you waste every week. $30.00 a week in fast food would supply 25-30 soldiers with deodorant for a month. And what about those old books lying around your closet? Box them up and donate them. Thinking about wasting $14.00 on a cd? Consider donating it to the USO. Are you aware that the Savannah USO provides the soldiers with postcards, which the USO pays postage for? That’s why it’s so important to donate, even if it’s just $5.00. Think of how many postcards they could mail with that donation? And how about phone cards? Wouldn’t it be great to provide them a way to contact their loved ones back home? Every little bit counts people. We’re talking about our brave men and women, fighting and dying, for us and others. It’s our duty to help them as much as we can.

Before I get to the list, I just wanted to tell you how much these soliders appreciate everything we do for them. The lady I spoke to on the phone was telling me how happy they are when they return. How grateful they are for all the donations. How appreciative they are for the volunteers who give their time and money to the cause. Just knowing that someone back home cares enough to do these things, means the world to them. They’re not asking for your entire paycheck, but is it really so much to go to the store and buy a few items to donate?
